2025 in Motion: Key Moments from GloPID-R’s First Few Months
Dear GloPID-R Members,
In December 2024, GloPID-R held its Annual General Assembly at the World Health Organization’s Headquarters in Geneva. This significant gathering brought together GloPID-R members from around the globe, Board members, and the Secretariat to strengthen our collective commitment to pandemic preparedness and research response.
The Assembly yielded two immediate and substantial outcomes: a strategic decision to enhance pandemic preparedness and response through an agreement to cooperate with WHO’s Collaborative Open Research Consortium, and the official launch of GloPID-R’s Coordinated Funding Mechanism: “Global Research Improving Pandemic Preparedness.” Membership also had significant dialogue the development of our new Strategic Plan, which will guide GloPID-R’s activities and priorities in the coming years. This collaborative effort reflects our shared vision for strengthening global research coordination and response capabilities. The Secretariat is continuing to take this effort forward for finalization at the next GA. Read More.

IDRCStrengthening vaccine research, ground-breaking vaccine trial and recognition for infectious disease research
Strengthening Africa’s vaccine research ecosystem
As African countries and development partners ramp up efforts to increase the continent’s vaccine manufacturing capacity, Africa’s vaccine research ecosystem must be strengthened. During the 2013 Ebola outbreak in West Africa, IDRC and international partners supported research to test a new vaccine in Guinea. This vaccine is now the cornerstone of preventing Ebola outbreaks in Africa and beyond. Without known treatments or vaccines for an infectious disease, integrating vaccine research into the response to an outbreak right from the beginning could help save millions of lives. This is why IDRC and Canadian partners are supporting the World Health Organization to strengthen research readiness for future outbreaks in 17 African countries. IDRC is partnering with the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency on a new project to complement basic vaccine research by strengthening capacity for vaccine-related social science research. WellcomeAdvancing Zika Virus Research: Key Priorities for Preparedness and Response
In 2023, Wellcome funded the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy (CIDRAP) at the University of Minnesota to identify key research priorities for Zika virus preparedness and response. In collaboration with global health experts, this work has now been published as a joint series in The Lancet Infectious Diseases and The Lance Microbe. This work is crucial in shaping the global response to Zika and advancing research to mitigate future risks. Read more.
ANRS MIEScientific Facilitation, Strategic Projects, Partnerships, and More
Scientific Facilitation
ANRS MIE has been designated by the World Health Organization (WHO) to lead a Collaborative Open Research Consortium (CORC) focused on filoviruses and will become a WHO Collaborating Center. CORCs are international networks of research institutions established by WHO, each dedicated to a specific family of pathogens with pandemic potential. Their main goal is to enhance global pandemic preparedness through collaborative research by identifying key research priorities, promoting knowledge sharing, and accelerating the development of countermeasures against emerging threats.
Strategic Projects
ANRS MIE is involved in the CSA CoMeCT (Coordination Mechanism for Cohorts and Trials), which aims to coordinate clinical research efforts at the European level. Specifically, ANRS MIE co-leads the Outbreak Response Board (ORB), which is responsible for developing decision-making frameworks for clinical research responses to infectious disease outbreaks and providing scientific assessments of research needs. Over the past six months, ORB has worked with the European Commission to identify clinical research priorities for Mpox (following the August 2024 Public Health Emergency of International Concern) and H5N1 (in response to the rapid spread of avian influenza in the U.S.). Funding calls
UKRIUK Research and Innovation
UK Research & Innovation (UKRI), in partnership with the UK’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, has just launched a new funding opportunity ‘Interdisciplinary research to tackle epidemic threats – UKRI’. The opportunity aims to better understand, predict and prevent (re-)emergence of infectious animal, human or plant diseases of epidemic potential through support of ambitious interdisciplinary research that crosses the disciplinary remits of the seven constituent Research Councils of UKRI. The opportunity will invest a minimum of £20m over five years. The conducting of such research will enhance our capability to respond to epidemic threats, through stimulating interdisciplinary research capacity and expertise. Project leads must be based at a UK research organisation eligible for UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) funding, and can include project co-leads (international). The deadline for applications is 19 June, 4pm UK time.
