GloPID-R Launches Coordinated Funding Mechanism to Strengthen Global Pandemic Preparedness, Global Research Improving Pandemic Preparedness (GRIPP)
At the General Assembly, hosted by WHO in Geneva 3-4 December, the GloPID-R global coalition of research funders launched a new funding mechanism ‘Global Research Improving Pandemic Preparedness (GRIPP)’. This initiative aims to improve collaboration between international research funders around the world, improving our research responses to future outbreaks, epidemics and wider health emergencies.
Through the GRIPP funding mechanism GloPID-R members will work together to strengthen existing research investments and direct funding into new research activities to address shared priorities. This will be achieved through both annual coordinated calls under agreed themes, as well as establishing a mechanism to permit rapid response by international funders to work together to launch research addressing outbreaks and health emergencies.
“GloPID-R takes a new milestone in its contribution to strengthening the global architecture on pandemic preparedness. The coordinated funding mechanism will enable GloPID-R international research funders to reinforce their collaboration and address together research questions to better combat infectious disease related emergencies” – Irene Norstedt, Director, DG Research and Innovation of the European Commission
The GRIPP mechanism will contribute to a strong global community of researchers, increasing research capacity and leadership with a focus on equity and inclusivity, through world-wide global partnerships involving low, middle and high income countries.
The first GRIPP call, focused on strengthening the clinical research ecosystem in low and middle-income countries to improve clinical trial good practices aligned with WHO guidance and GloPID-R Roadmap for Clinical Trial Coordination, will be launched in early 2025.
