Ebola Virus Disease is severe and often fatal, causing outbreaks that pose a serious threat to public health. While GloPID-R has not created a dedicated Ebola working group, we have consistently been mobilized to respond to outbreaks since 2014.
In May 2018, GloPID-R reacted quickly when a new outbreak of Ebola was declared in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Our coalition aligned with WHO to coordinate rapid funding for urgent research projects. To make emergency funding available within 48 hours after the initial announcement, we worked in close coordination with WHO and GloPID-R members the Wellcome Trust and the UK Department for International Development (DFID since renamed FCDO).
When the Ministry of Health of the DRC had declared an Ebola outbreak on May 11, 2017, it was closely monitored by GloPID-R members.
The 2014 – 2016 outbreak in West Africa was the largest Ebola outbreak since the virus was first discovered in 1976. In response to this health emergency, in 2014, GloPID-R members organized the Ebola R&D Funders’ Meeting in December. Several months later, GloPID-R organized a ‘Learning from Ebola’ conference alongside our General Assembly, held in Cape Town in May 2015.
GloPID-R members, funding bodies and researchers have been particularly committed to sharing data rapidly during these outbreaks.
Prepared by GloPID-R members and other funders of outbreak research, this is the February 2015 update of the report from the Ebola R&D Funders’ Meeting jointly organized on 11 December 2014 by the European Commission, Directorate-General for Research & Innovation, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
This map, produced by GloPID-R partner organizations, documents social sciences operational research for the Ebola response in the North Kivu/Ituri regions of the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as in Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, and South Sudan.
The GloPID-R Secretariat is a project which receives funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 101094188.
