In a ‘Personal View’ contribution signed by Herman Goossens, Lennie Derde, Peter Hornby and Marc Bonten, the authors recommend several steps to prepare the European clinical research response of the future. Among other recommendations, they advise establishing globally connected clinical trial networks to ensure coordination and collaboration using a clinical research model that is faster and better adapted to addressing future global pandemics.

As part of ‘Future perspective and recommendations’, the writers emphasize that “the future pandemic clinical research response of the EU should be embedded in the global response.” This is where GloPID-R could play a role, they argue, to ensure that the European response is harmonized with the global response.

If GloPID-R were to coordinate future clinical research funding during pandemics, the authors highlight the importance of setting up mechanisms to rapidly release funds from pre-established pools, in order to jumpstart clinical research, with WHO playing a normative role to make recommendations on research priorities, data standards, and best practices.

‘The European clinical research response to optimize treatment of patients with COVID-19: lessons learned, future perspective, and recommendation’ was published online December 21, 2021.
