In April and May, GloPID-R representatives participated in several international meetings where they introduced our organization and spoke about our current priorities.

‘Paradigm shifts for Global One Health’ symposium

The GloPID-R One Health Working Group, run jointly by GloPID-R and STAR-IDAZ International Research Consortium on Animal Health (IRC), made an active contribution to the ‘Paradigm shifts for Global One Health’ symposium in Wageningen, the Netherlands, 23-25 April 2024. Hans-Eckhardt Hagen (GloPID-R Scientific & Advocacy Director) and Madeline Newman (STAR-IDAZ Project Manager) were invited to take part in a panel discussion. Hans Hagen presented the One Health Living Roadmap for Funders currently in development.

Updates on One Health Working Group

‘High-Level Emergency Regional Meeting on Mpox in Africa’

To address the ongoing mpox public health emergency, GloPID-R was invited to have a voice in the ‘High-Level Emergency Regional Meeting on Mpox in Africa’ convened by Africa CDC and partner organizations including CEPI and Wellcome. The meeting took place on 11-13 April in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of Congo. In attendance remotely and representing GloPID-R were Hans-Eckhardt Hagen, GloPID-R Scientific & Advocacy Director, and Duduzile Ndwandwe, Head of the Africa Hub Secretariat and Deputy Director, Cochrane South Africa. The meeting brought together ministers of health, health officials, experts, and partners from African countries affected by or at risk of mpox outbreaks. A communiqué ‘United in the Fight against mpox in Africa’ was signed by the Ministers of Health of Angola, Benin, Burundi, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Congo, Democratic Republic of Congo, Gabon, Ghana, Liberia, Nigeria, Uganda and partners.

‘Climate Change & Health Funders Forum


Participants at the ‘Climate Change & Health Funders Forum’

Research funders are increasingly invested in the topic of climate change and health, and our funders’ alliance was pleased to take part in this forum which focused particularly on how funders are working together in Africa.

Held in Newlands, Cape Town, the ‘Climate Change & Health: African Health Research and Innovation Funders Forum’ took place on 6 – 8 May. GloPID-R was represented by Hans-Eckhardt Hagen, Scientific & Advocacy Director.

 

2nd Medical Countermeasures R&D Funders Roundtable

Hans-Eckhardt Hagen, GloPID-R Scientific & Advocacy Director, was invited to participate in the ‘2nd Medical Countermeasures (MCM) R&D Funders’ Roundtable, hosted by the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) and co-chaired with CEPI. The roundtable took place in Cape Town on 9 – 10 May 2024 and was a continuation of the first such Funders’ Roundtable held in Brussels. It provided an opportunity for further in-depth discussion of potential collaborative projects to support essential MCM R&D, manufacturing, and regulatory pathways for pathogens with epidemic or pandemic potential.

‘Europe United against Old and New Pandemics’ conference

Members of the GloPID-R Board and several representatives of GloPID-R member organizations participated in the ‘Europe United against Old and New Pandemics’ conference on 14 and 15 May 2023 in Antwerp. Former GloPID-R Board Chair and Board member Yazdan Yazdanpanah (ANRS | MIE, France) presented GloPID-R and its initiatives and objectives. He spoke in particular about GloPID-R’s Clinical Trials Working Group and the ‘Living Roadmap for Funders’ made public in May 2023. The Clinical Trials Roadmap has been formally endorsed by 14 individual funding organizations, and presented at important international meetings, including the WHO Clinical Trials Forum in November 2023.
