We are pleased to announce that, from 1st May, 2026, the EDCTP Association in The Hague, the Netherlands, in partnership with the Pandemic Sciences Institute, University of Oxford, has secured funding from the European Union’s Horizon Europe research and innovation framework programme to host the GloPID-R Secretariat for the next three years. The University of Oxford has been a partner in all previous Secretariat grants and will continue as a partner in this new grant term, The new secretariat builds on the successful work of the previous Coordinating Secretariat hosted by the Charité Center for Global Health at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin from January 2023 to April 2026.
GloPID-R is the global coalition of research funding organisations that supports research to increase pandemic preparedness and response. In its new role, the EDCTP Association will continue and further develop tasks undertaken by the Secretariat hosted at Charité, providing administrative and organisational support and leading GloPID-R communications. It will facilitate engagement and information sharing among GloPID-R members, observers and stakeholders, and raise the visibility of this global coalition and its activities. The University of Oxford will continue to lead the scientific work of GloPID-R, providing scientific and policy analyses and technical advice to the network, and managing GloPID-R’s working groups.
To ensure a smooth and successful transition from the current Coordinating Secretariat, based at Charité , the incoming EDCTP Association team has been working closely with the outgoing Secretariat. Together, they have been ensuring continuity of operations, with no disruption to GloPID-R’s activities during the handover period.
Over the course of the past three years, the GloPID-R team has delivered significant achievements. These include the successful launch of the new GloPID-R Strategy, the implementation of the Global Research Improving Pandemic Preparedness (GRIPP) coordinated funding initiative with the successful launch of the first call, response to several regional outbreaks and the expansion of the GloPID-R membership with the addition of the Global Health Innovative Technology (GHIT) Fund and the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI).
GloPID-R Working Groups produced several notable outputs during the last Secretariat term, including the Implementation Guide from the Data Sharing Working Group and the Clinical Trials Roadmap and Progress Report from the Clinical Trials Working Group as well as Lessons on Research Prioritisation during outbreaks from the LMIC Working Group. The Pandemic PACT research programme was also launched during this grant period. Looking ahead, the new Secretariat team is looking forward to build on these strong foundations, continuing to strengthen global research collaboration and coordination in epidemic and pandemic preparedness and response.
Mongezi Mdhluli, GloPID-R Board Chair said, “We are delighted that the EDCTP Association will lead the next GloPID-R Secretariat together with the Pandemic Sciences Institute at the University of Oxford. With its long-standing relationship with GloPID-R and as a key delivery partner for the GRIPP initiative, EDCTP has consistently demonstrated its commitment to global research collaboration. We are confident that this next phase will further strengthen GloPID-R’s impact in advancing coordinated research efforts for epidemic preparedness. We thank the outgoing Secretariat and Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin for their contribution and support while hosting the Secretariat during the last term. “
Pauline Beattie, Operations Manager and Scientific Adviser at EDCTP Association, added, “We are honoured to take on the role of hosting the GloPID-R Secretariat. We look forward to working closely with the GloPID-R members to drive forward collaborative research efforts, strengthen coordination across funders, and enhance global readiness for future infectious disease threats.”
Beate Kampmann, Scientific Director of the Charité Center for Global Health at Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin said, “Hosting the GloPID-R Secretariat for the past three years has been a privilege for Charité. As a research institution, we highly value global cooperation between funders, and this collaboration has advanced the collective effort to improve pandemic preparedness and response worldwide. We are proud of what we have achieved together and wish the new Secretariat team every success in continuing this vital work.”
