Working Group

Research Funding Contraction

Responding to emerging research gaps by redefining shared priorities in an evolving funding landscape

  • Secretariat co-chair: Alice Norton, Scientific Director of GloPID-R

Aims & objectives

This Working Group has been created to support coordination between GloPID-R members on policy and practice during a period of funding contraction, where greater communication amongst members may enable shared learning and action in relation to pandemic preparedness. With support from Pandemic PACT, the working group will enable members to collaboratively characterise recent funding cuts, research gaps and vulnerabilities to identify priority areas for funding and collaboration. The working group will also act as a forum for knowledge sharing on funder policy activities.

Background

This group emerged from an ad hoc GloPID-R meeting in July 2025 on the implications of recent global health funding contractions for research on epidemic and pandemic-prone pathogens, which identified a need for ongoing monitoring of evolving funding gaps and priorities to enhance coordination of funders’ activities.

A time-limited working group was proposed to fulfil this function and to report back for the benefit of all members. The group held its first meeting in October 2025.
