In December 2022, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) declared a national outbreak of mpox. In response to the escalation of events, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the outbreak a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) on 14 August 2024, shortly after the Africa CDC declared a public health emergency of continental security.
Through Pandemic PACT and GloPID-R’s Africa Hub, a technical briefing was carried out with GloPID-R members of a highly specialised mpox meeting in March 2023.
An updated technical briefing was shared with the GloPID-R membership in June 2024, which detailed the ongoing research activity, highlighted evidence gaps, and outlined the funding landscape.
In October 2024, GloPID-R Research and Policy Team along with the Pandemic PACT team shared their third version of the technical briefing, detailing the ongoing research activity, highlighting evidence gaps, and outlining the funding landscape with the GloPID-R membership.
Pandemic PACT has produced data visualizations for mpox research funding, including visualizations which map funding data to outbreak-specific research priorities.
A summary report of the current outbreak is published regularly here and additional reporting of the clinical trials landscape can be found here.
The results of the Pandemic PACT mpox data analyses have fed into the International Pandemic Preparedness Secretariat (IPPS) update, with the deep-dive landscape of mpox therapeutics clinical trials presented in the 100 Days Mission Day 45 update (and subsequent updates). Furthermore, the Mpox outbreak summary reports have been used by funding panels to support funding decision-making.
Upcoming publications include an mpox Clade I Rapid Research Needs Appraisal and mpox research landscape report. These publications will be released by April 2025.
