G20 Health Ministers Meeting
GloPID-R was recognized for its work in research and development (R&D) preparedness at the G20 Health Ministers Meeting in Berlin, Germany on May 19 – 20, 2017.
The G20 acknowledges that R&D are necessary to quickly develop and provide quality medicines, diagnostics, vaccines and medical equipment during health outbreaks. To accelerate research efforts and implement timely data-sharing, it requires sustainable funding and effective global coordination.
“We welcome and support new models for R&D preparedness including the ‘WHO R&D Blueprint,’ the Global Research Collaboration for Infectious Disease Preparedness (GLOPID-R) and the ‘Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI),’ which is developing new vaccines for epidemics,” the communique said.
The G20 is a forum for international economic cooperation, which, under the German G20 Presidency, has put global health on the agenda. The G20 is currently working to reduce the devastating impact of health emergencies and is calling for a coordinated global response on health challenges such as infectious disease outbreaks.
The results of this meeting will shape the agenda of the G20 leaders’ summit in Hamburg in July 2017.
