GLOPID-R

Working Group

Research in Low- and Middle-Income Countries

Strengthening the epidemic and pandemic response in low-resource settings

  • Chair: Charles Wiysonge (SA MRC)
  • Research Prioritisation Sub-group Chair: Alice Norton (GloPID-R Secretariat)
  • Coordinated funding Sub-group Chair: Hans Hagen (GloPID-R Secretariat)

The Research Prioritisation sub-group is developing recommendations for best practices to develop and apply regional and local research priorities during epidemics/pandemics. The Coordinated Funding sub-group is exploring models of rapid coordinated funding for research in response to epidemics/pandemics in LMICs.

Deliverables

Aims & objectives

  • Support a coordinated approach to research funding for preparedness for and response to the current COVID-19 pandemics and future epidemics and pandemics in LMICs
  • Coordinate capacity-strengthening efforts among funders of research in LMICs
  • Facilitate exchange of ideas on aligning funding to the research needs of LMICs

Background

This working group was formed during the COVID-19 pandemic from the COVID CIRCLE Initiative. The group’s focus has since expanded to include broader research for preparedness and response to epidemics and pandemics, as the COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the importance of a global approach to pandemic preparedness and response research. In the short term, the group has elected to focus on two priority areas: research priority setting and coordinated funding. Work on these topics is under way and will provide best practice standards and recommendations to the GloPID-R membership and the broader funders’ community.
