A coordinated funding mechanism based on the broad engagement of the GloPID-R membership has been a longstanding priority of our funders’ coalition.
In December 2024, GloPID-R officially launched the Global Research Improving Pandemic Preparedness (GRIPP) mechanism. This current initiative builds on past recommendations of the GloPID-R Scientific Advisory Group and the approval of the GloPID-R membership at the General Assembly in October 2023 in Berlin.
GRIPP is designed to leverage the research investments already being made by members in pandemic preparedness and clinical trials, to add value and create something “greater than the sum of its parts”. While national level funders will contribute, the overarching aim is to achieve multinational collaboration.
Through the GRIPP funding mechanism, GloPID-R members will work together to strengthen existing research investments and direct funding into new research activities to address shared priorities. This will be achieved through both annual coordinated calls under agreed themes, as well as establishing a mechanism to permit rapid response by international funders to work together to launch research addressing outbreaks and health emergencies. The GloPID-R Secretariat plays a central role in coordinating the development of funding calls, which build on the principles set out in the GloPID-R Funders Living Roadmap for Clinical Trial Coordination.
