GloPID-R prepares for General Assembly at the WHO headquarters in Geneva on December 3rd and 4th, 2024
As the global community navigates three ongoing Emerging Infectious Diseases (EID) emergencies—clade 1 mpox, H5N1, and Marburg virus—we are reminded of the vital role that GloPID-R plays in research preparedness and response. This newsletter highlights just a fraction of the research efforts underway to combat these outbreaks and prepare for future challenges.

Board member Dr. Elizabeth Higgs is Editor-in-Chief of new book, ‘Principles and Practice of Emergency Research Response’.
The book details recommendations from experts in clinical research and related fields on best practices for the novel field of research response to disease outbreaks and also includes framework for preparing for and implementing emergency research. Online access and a free copy of the e-book can be downloaded here.
GloPID-R prepares for General Assembly at the WHO HQ in Geneva on December 3rd and December 4th, 2024.
We are in the final stages of preparing for the 2024 GloPID-R General Assembly, which will be held at the World Health Organization Headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, on December 3rd and 4th, 2024. We strongly encourage all GloPID-R members and observers to actively participate in this meeting to help shape the future direction of GloPID-R.
GloPID-R PI Professor Dr Christian Drosten and Board Member Hervé Raoul participate as panellists at the World Health Summit session on Pandemic Preparedness.
At the World Health Summit in Berlin, the European Commission hosted a session titled “Research and Innovation on Pandemic Preparedness in the EU and Global Context” on the final day of the event. This session focused on the EU’s role in preparing for future pandemics. Read more in our News & Events article
Pandemic PACT’s Outbreak Pages
In response to new or re-emerging outbreaks, the Pandemic PACT team has developed real-time tracking and analysis of outbreak research data by collating existing data from their database and intensifying their collection efforts. Read more

EDCTP3 Global Health EDCTP3 launches research projects to combat MPOX
On the 14th of August 2024, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC) in response to the rapidly escalating Mpox outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and a growing number of affected countries in Africa. Read more
WellcomeWellcome funding catalysing progress in Nipah and Lassa Research
Two key publications emerged from Wellcome’s support of CIDRAP’s work on the WHO Blueprint Roadmap for Nipah and Lassa viruses. Published as Personal Views in The Lancet Infectious Diseases (July 2024), these papers provide valuable insights from leading global experts. Read more

WHO Hub Speaker Series N°9
We are delighted to share that Dr Alice Norton from GloPID-R will be a speaker at the WHO Hub for Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence and Charité Center for Global Health on the topic ‘The Role of Research in Pandemic and Epidemic Intelligence’ on November 28th, 2024. The speaker series will take place from 18:30 to 20:00 CEST at the WHO Hub in Berlin.
