Countdown to the GloPID-R Africa Hub Launch: August 22-23, 2023 in Cape Town
The official launch of the GloPID-R Africa Hub is just days away! To mark this important milestone, a conference is being organised in Cape Town by the GloPID-R Africa Hub Secretariat and the South African Medical Research Council through its Cochrane South Africa intramural unit.
This hybrid event – held both live and online – will feature keynote presentations, roundtable discussions and break-out sessions for some 100 participants including GloPID-R members and observers, major research funders, and partner organisations from Africa and beyond.
On the programme are key topics of importance for funding organisations, policy makers, and other stakeholders: identifying priority research areas on the continent, assessing Africa’s response to national and regional epidemics, fostering collaboration among research funders, and exploring ways to strengthen early warning and surveillance systems in the context of infectious disease outbreaks. The organisational structure of the new hub and an update on the work of the Africa Hub Secretariat will also be presented.
The line-up of expert speakers on the programme includes:
- Prof Glenda Gray, President and CEO, SAMRC
- Prof Salim S. Abdool Karim, Director, CAPRISA & Chair, UNAIDS Scientific Expert Panel
- Prof Charles Wiysonge, Regional Adviser, WHO & Chair, GloPID-R LMIC
- Dr Hans Hagen, Director, Scientific & Advocacy, GloPID-R
- Dr Elvis Temfack, Senior Research Officer, Africa CDC
The Africa Hub is hosted by the South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) with the generous support of the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP) funded by the UK Department of Health & Social Care.
